Actress Patty Duke, right, spoke about the importance of reducing stigma surrounding mental illness in a photograph on the cover of the May 10, 2001, issue of the Beverly Press and Park Labrea News. Duke spoke at Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services’ annual awards ceremony and was joined by Dr. Duane McWaine and the organization’s executive director, Kira Curry. May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services called attention to resources that are available. Duke, who died in 2016, was a staunch advocate in the fight for mental health services. Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services offers a multitude of resources including a suicide prevention center and hotline, substance abuse programs, counseling and care management.
