One male adult and three male juveniles are facing attempted murder charges for a stabbing that occurred during a fight on May 1 outside Los Angeles High School.
Detectives with the Los Angeles Police Department’s Wilshire Division arrested the adult, identified as Danny Ramon Lopez Sanchez, 23, on May 3. Further investigation determined three juveniles were involved in the crime and they were also taken into custody, police said.
Sanchez was booked for attempted murder and held on $1 million bail. Two of the juveniles were booked for attempted murder and the other was booked for accessory to attempted murder.
A third juvenile suspect who was questioned during the investigation and found to be in possession of a firearm is facing gun charges, but authorities did not link him to the stabbing. Police did not release the names or ages of the juveniles.
The stabbing occurred around 4:25 p.m. on May 1 during a fight on the sidewalk near Olympic and Rimpau boulevards, on the northwest edge of the L.A. High School campus. It involved 6-10 individuals, mostly juveniles, police said.
Two juveniles who were stabbed in the melee are recovering. One was a student at the high school, and the other was not an L.A. High student, police said. No further details were provided about the victims.
Sanchez was originally detained and questioned during the investigation and released. Authorities later determined he is a suspect in the crime and placed him under arrest. The motive and information about events leading up to the fight have not been released.
In the aftermath of the incident, two additional Los Angeles School Police Department officers have been assigned to patrol around the school and LAPD officers are also frequently patrolling the surrounding neighborhoods. A parent who wished to remain anonymous said there have been previous fights in and around the school, leading to concerns about safety. She said she witnessed the fight while picking her daughter up from the Girls Academic Leadership Academy, which is located on the L.A. High School campus. The additional police officers assigned to the area have helped allay fears, but there is still a concern about crime, the parent said.
“No child, in their day-to-day of going to school, should be afraid,” she added.
Detectives are asking any witnesses or anyone with information to call Wilshire Division detectives at (213)922-8234. During weekends and off-hours, call the LAPD’s hotline at (877)LAPD247.
