A jury returned a verdict in favor of Jane Doe in the case of Doe vs. Steven Fitzgerald Et Al in Riverside Superior Court on April 25 in the amount of $2.28 billion ($836 million in damages and $1.444 million in punitive damages).
Defendants, the Church of Jesus Christ Latter-Day Saints and Kathleen Denise Bingley, settled out prior to trial.
Defendant Steven Fitzgerald raped and sexually assaulted plaintiff Jane Doe throughout her childhood from the age of five through the age of 14 years old, when he was finally arrested and convicted of felony lewd acts on a minor. The sexual assaults were committed from 1989 to 2003.
Fitzgerald admitted to the rape and molestation in sworn deposition testimony but failed to appear at trial. The jury returned its verdict on the third day.
Lead trial counsel for Ms. Doe, Gary A. Dordick, argued to the jury that if the Dominion Corporation in its lawsuit against FOX News is entitled to $787.5 million for damage to its reputation, then certainly Jane Doe is entitled to $800 million in compensatory damages and $800 million in punitive damages for 14 years of brutal sexual abuse.
Jane Doe’s trial team consisted of Gary A. Dordick and his two daughters, Michelle and Taylor Dordick, from Dordick Law Corporation in Beverly Hills.
Ms. Doe wants everyone to know there is no shame in being a victim of abuse. The Jane Doe name is used to protect the privacy of her children.
