The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority is advising about subway work along the Purple Line Extension project.
Crews are making progress at many locations along the tunnel alignment under Wilshire Boulevard. Work is ongoing at street level and in staging yards for the new subway stations at Wilshire/La Brea, Wilshire/Fairfax, Wilshire/La Cienega, Wilshire/Rodeo and Century City/ Constellation. The Purple Line Extension is expected to open between Wilshire/Western and Wilshire/La Cienega in late 2024, and to Century City/ Constellation in 2025.
Decking removal and street restoration work is scheduled to begin on the weekend of April 28-May 1, and continue for eight consecutive weekends. Wilshire Boulevard will be closed from 9 p.m. on Friday through 6 a.m. on Monday between San Vicente and La Cienega boulevards.
Backfill operations will continue in April in advance of the decking removal. Wilshire Boulevard will be reduced to a single lane in each direction between San Vicente and La Cienega boulevards on weeknights from 8 p.m.-7 a.m., and on weekends from 6 a.m.-8 p.m. Access to Tower, Gale and Hamilton drives from Wilshire Boulevard may be impacted.
Through June, street restoration work will be ongoing at Wilshire/La Brea. Wilshire Boulevard will be reduced to two lanes in each direction between Highland and La Brea avenues. A K-rail work zones has been implemented on the south side of Wilshire Boulevard between La Brea and Mansfield avenues.
Near Wilshire/Fairfax, crews are working in a staging yard along the south side of Wilshire Boulevard. Wilshire Boulevard has been reduced to two lanes in each direction. The work zone on the north side of the street at Wilshire/Fairfax is expected to be in place through early June. A K-rail work zone also remains in place through summer 2024 at Wilshire Boulevard and La Jolla Avenue.
In Beverly Hills, potholing activity in preparation for the construction of rooms and passageways adjacent to the main subway station will occur in multiple stages along South Beverly and South Canon drives. Traffic lane and sidewalk closures will be implemented on weekdays from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. and weekends from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.
New traffic configurations are in place along Wilshire Boulevard between El Camino and Crescent drives. Permanent power feeds to the future station are expected to be complete by the end of April. Ground improvement also continues around the Wilshire/Rodeo station. Notices will be provided on future closures for ground improvement work.
Utility work continues to progress in Century City. A sewer and storm drain is being relocated from within the project area through the second quarter of 2023. Traffic control is in place around the station area to accommodate relocation work. Left turns are restricted from northbound Avenue of the Stars onto westbound Constellation Boulevard. Avenue of the Stars will also be reduced to one lane north and southbound at Constellation Boulevard.
Work is also ongoing on the Westwood/UCLA subway station. Through April 14, LADWP crews will be inspecting and working on a conduit and duct bank on Wilshire Boulevard between Westwood Boulevard and Gayley Avenue. Three lanes of traffic will remain open on westbound Wilshire Boulevard. Left turns will be restricted from 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. from Wilshire Boulevard on to Westwood Boulevard and Gayley Avenue.
Through May 31, crews will be working on the storm drain catch basins and will begin on the junction structure for the future Westwood/UCLA station. Work will occur on the southern portion of the intersection of Wilshire Boulevard and Gayley/Midvale avenues. Traffic restrictions will be implemented on Wilshire Boulevard between Veteran and Gayley avenues.
