Metro is preparing for major upcoming work on the Purple Line Extension subway project near Wilshire/La Cienega.
Decking removal and street restoration work is scheduled to begin on the weekend of April 28-May 1, and continue for eight consecutive weekends. Wilshire Boulevard will be completely closed on weekends from 9 p.m. on Friday through 6 a.m. on Monday between San Vicente and La Cienega boulevards.
Construction is also occurring at other locations near Wilshire/La Cienega. South Tower Drive will be intermittently closed at Wilshire Boulevard on weekdays from 7 a.m.- 6 p.m. from Thursday, April 20, through Friday, April 28. The closure supports utility maintenance on Tower Drive. From 8 p.m. on Friday, April 21, through 9 p.m. on Sunday, April 23, South Hamilton Drive may be closed between Wilshire Boulevard and Gregory Way for sewer maintenance work.
Backfill operations will also continue in April near Wilshire/La Cienega in advance of decking removal. Wilshire Boulevard will be reduced to a single lane in each direction between San Vicente and La Cienega boulevards on weeknights from 8 p.m.-7 a.m., and on weekends from 6 a.m.-8 p.m. Access to Tower, Gale and Hamilton drives from Wilshire Boulevard may be impacted.
Metro has announced new work on the Purple Line Extension project in the Greater Wilshire and Brookside communities. Through May, intermittent lane reductions on Wilshire Boulevard at Rimpau Boulevard may be required from 7 a.m.-11 p.m. on weekends. The temporary traffic control will support subsurface investigation. Full closures of Rimpau Boulevard at Wilshire Boulevard may be implemented. Access to residences will be maintained on side streets north and south of Wilshire Boulevard.
Work is ongoing at street level and underground on the new subway stations at Wilshire/La Brea and Wilshire/Fairfax. Crews are restoring streets, sidewalks and curbs near Wilshire/La Brea, and are building the subway station entrance. Wilshire Boulevard will be reduced to two lanes in each direction between Highland and La Brea avenues.
Near Wilshire/Fairfax, crews are building the subway station in a staging yard near Wilshire Boulevard and Ogden Drive. Work is also ongoing at street level near Wilshire/Fairfax. Wilshire Boulevard has been reduced to two lanes in each direction in the area.
Potholing activity is expected to begin in May in Beverly Hills near the Wilshire/Rodeo station. Preparation work is ongoing for rooms and passageways adjacent to the main subway station. The work will occur in multiple stages along South Beverly and South Canon drives near Wilshire Boulevard. Traffic lane and sidewalk closures will be in place. Permanent power feeds to the future station are expected to be complete by the end of April.
In Century City, work is occurring on the new subway station. A sewer and storm drain is being relocated from within the project area through the second quarter of 2023. Left turns are restricted from northbound Avenue of the Stars onto westbound Constellation Boulevard. Avenue of the Stars will also be reduced to one lane north and southbound at Constellation Boulevard.
Work is also ongoing on the Westwood/UCLA subway station. Street investigation for tunneling will occur from April 24-28 along Wilshire Boulevard near Malcolm Avenue. Center lane reductions will occur on Wilshire Boulevard between Glendon and Manning avenues from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Crews will be working on storm drain catch basins in the area through May 31. Work will occur on the southern portion of the intersection of Wilshire Boulevard and Gayley/Midvale avenues.
