The Institute of Museum and Library Services announced on March 28 that the L.A. County Library is among 30 finalists for the 2023 National Medal for Museum and Library Service. The L.A. County Library system, which includes the West Hollywood Library, is one of six institutions in California to be selected as a finalist for the award.
The National Medal is the nation’s highest honor given to museums and libraries that demonstrate significant impact in their communities. For more than 25 years, the award has honored institutions that demonstrate excellence in service to their communities.
“L.A. County Library is deeply honored to be a finalist for the 2023 IMLS National Medal,” library director Skye Patrick said. “L.A. County Library is dedicated to removing barriers to access and increasing equitable opportunities for all in Los Angeles County, and this nomination is a testament to the vital work our staff is doing on a daily basis to improve quality of life for L.A. communities, helping residents of all ages learn, grow and thrive.”
“So many museums and libraries across the country are committed to providing programs that are vital to the health and growth of engaged communities. We are very proud to announce the 30 finalists for this year’s IMLS National Medal,” IMLS director Crosby Kemper added. “These institutions represent the best of what museums and libraries do for their communities.”
To celebrate the honor, IMLS is encouraging L.A. County residents who use the library system’s services to share stories, memories, photographs and videos on social media using the hashtags #ShareYourStory and #IMLSmedals, and engage with IMLS on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
National Medal winners will be announced in late May. Representatives from winning institutions will be honored for their extraordinary contributions during an in-person National Medals Ceremony this summer.
