Starting Jan. 10, theater lovers will be able to watch free rehearsed readings of plays developed in the Theatre West Writers Workshop. As part of its New Works Play Festival, the theater will host the free readings every Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
The reading series kicks off on Jan. 10 with “Trumpets and Table Tipping,” by Charlie Mount, in which legendary magician Harry Houdini battles a clairvoyant at a country home.
This will be followed with a Jan. 17 reading of “The Feel Good Story America Needs Right Now,” by Mark Wilding. In this play, six everyday-Americans, who achieved fame after escaping the clutches of a notorious terrorist group, are set to appear on a “60-Minutes”-esque news program. But does the hype meet the reality?
“MY UTERUS (a womb with a view),” by Dina Morrone, will be read on Jan. 24. In the play, Dina digs deep into her pelvic cavity to explore what the uterus really is, what it means to own one, and to probe and examine how it continues to get screwed over and over again, by those who have no business being in there.
“Muscle Memory,” by Nalsey Tinberg, which will be read on Jan. 31, explores pain and loss, history and memory, and asks an essential question: Can friendship survive?
For information and a full list of readings, visit theatrewest.org.
Theatre West is located at 3333 Cahuenga Blvd. West. The readings are free, but donations are encouraged.
