A photograph in the Nov. 14, 2002, issue of the Beverly Press and Park Labrea News showed National Portrait Gallery director Marc Pachter discussing “George Washington: A National Treasure,” a new exhibit at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Pachter was shown with the “Lansdowne Portrait” (1796) by artist Gilbert Stuart, which is considered the most famous depiction of America’s first president and is located in the National Portrait Gallery at the Smithsonian Institution. It was displayed in the exhibit at LACMA along with numerous additional artworks and items from Washington’s presidency. The exhibit, which was touring the western United States in 2002, aimed to connect people to the past and instill an interest in American history.
