Detectives with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Major Crimes Bureau are investigating a robbery and assault on Nov. 4 in a parking lot on Sunset Boulevard in which a victim was injured after being struck by the suspect’s vehicle.

The robbery occurred at approximately 9:10 a.m. in a parking lot at 9030 Sunset Blvd. Sgt. Joana Warren, with the West Hollywood Sheriff’s Station, said witnesses thought two men were fighting and called 911.

When deputies arrived, they found the victim suffering from injuries sustained after being struck by a vehicle. The suspect fled and no arrests were made. The victim was taken to a hospital in stable condition and is recovering, police said.

Deputies located security camera footage of the incident, and it was later broadcast by numerous media outlets. The footage shows the victim, who had just parked a white Tesla sedan, being approached by a male suspect who exited an Infiniti that followed him into the parking lot. The suspect, who was wearing a ski mask, pointed a handgun at the victim and demanded jewelry, Warren said.

The suspect knocked the victim to the ground, and the victim got up and ran away. The suspect then got back into the Infiniti and drove toward the victim, striking him near a driveway on the south side of Sunset Boulevard. The suspect exited his vehicle and again attempted to rob the victim as he was laying on the sidewalk. A brief scuffle ensued, and security camera footage showed the suspect getting back into the Infiniti and driving away.

“During the scuffle, the suspect dropped the handgun. [It] was recovered at the scene,” Warren said. “We also determined the suspect did not steal the victim’s jewelry.”

Warren said the Major Crimes Bureau assumed the investigation because the crime fits a trend in which victims are followed from other locations and robbed of jewelry. Detectives from the West Hollywood Sheriff’s Station are working with Major Crimes Bureau detectives on the case, she added. Authorities have not divulged where the victim was coming from, or his destination. Warren said the crime has not been linked to any similar incidents.

“It’s under investigation,” Warren said. “We believe the victim was targeted because when [the suspect] went up to him, he demanded the expensive jewelry.”

The suspect was wearing a black shirt, jeans and black shoes. The Infiniti was described as a gray, four-door sedan. The car was last seen heading east on Sunset Boulevard.
