The Skirball Cultural Center’s We the People film series kicks off on Sunday, Sept. 25, at 12:30 p.m. with the Academy Award-winning film “Gentleman’s Agreement.”

In the film, journalist Phil Green (Gregory Peck) moves to New York City to take on a high-profile magazine assignment about antisemitism. In an attempt to capture the story empathetically, he pretends to be Jewish and faces bigotry firsthand.

Released in 1947, “Gentleman’s Agreement” offers a look at antisemitism and workplace discrimination before the United States enacted equal employment protections for workers in 1972. Following the screening, political scholar and producer David Bender and special guest Cecilia Peck (Gregory Peck’s daughter) will discuss how the film examines the role of prejudice in post-war America and challenges the country’s moral center.
