The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office has charged Adam Friedman, son of Beverly Hills City Councilman Lester Friedman, for allegedly creating a fake social media account impersonating Sharona Nazarian, an opponent of his father in the June 7 Beverly Hills City Council election.
The D.A.’s office’s Public Integrity Division charged Friedman, 37, with one felony count of identity theft and one misdemeanor count of internet/electronic impersonation. Arraignment will be scheduled at a later date in Department 30 of the Foltz Criminal Justice Center, according to the D.A.’s office, which did not provide information on whether Friedman was arrested or in custody.
The defendant is accused of creating a fake Instagram account in April for Nazarian, who at the time was running for a seat on the Beverly Hills City Council. Three seats were open on the council in the June 7 election. Lester Friedman received the highest number of votes and was re-elected to a second term. Nazarian received the second highest vote total and was elected to the council for the first time. Both were sworn in on July 12, along with Councilman John Mirisch, who was re-elected to a fourth term.
Authorities executed a search warrant at Lester Friedman’s home on June 9 as part of an investigation into a fake Instagram account that voiced support for Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón on behalf of Nazarian. The Instagram account, Sharona4Gascon, had since been disabled.
After the warrant was served, Lester Friedman confirmed his home was searched regarding the Sharona4Gascon Instagram account.
“According to the investigators, my residence was one of eight locations that search warrants had been issued for,” Friedman said in early June. “The search warrant was not directed [at me], nor did it name me. We, of course, fully cooperated with the investigation.”
Lester Friedman did not immediately respond to a request for comment. His campaign manager, Judie Fenton, said they were unaware of the charges or the origin of the fake Instagram account.
“We knew nothing about it, we know nothing about it,” Fenton said.
The D.A.’s office’s has not provided any further information about the case, which remains under investigation by the District Attorney’s Bureau of Investigation.
Nazarian declined to comment on the charges.
“Since the D.A.’s office has indicated that this is an ongoing investigation, I don’t believe it is appropriate for me to offer a comment at this time,” she said.
