Classes at Hancock Park Elementary have seen the culmination of a 2-year-long inquiry project about monarchs and pollinators. The students raised $1400, matched by Los Angeles Unified School District Board Vice President Nick Melvoin, and used the money to start a pollinator garden. The school has even registered the garden as an official Monarch Waystation.
The garden was dedicated in a ceremony dedicating the site to principal Ashley Parker on June 9, with students surprising the principal with painted murals. The garden was also named in her honor, with one of the painted murals reading “Mrs. Parker’s Pollinator Garden.” Parker is retiring after 43 years of service with LAUSD.
Following the ceremony, the principal took pictures with each of the classes in attendance. Aloe, a student at Hancock, praised Parker.
“Mrs. Parker is the best principal I could ever have,” Aloe said. “She’s a very kind principal, and she loves nature and she loves bees.”
Hancock Park Elementary is located at 408 S. Fairfax Ave.
