The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority has announced that 17 artists have been commissioned to create site-specific, integrated artworks for the future Wilshire/Rodeo, Century City/Con-stellation, Westwood/UCLA and Westwood/VA Hospital stations for the Purple Line Extension subway project.
The projects are expected to enhance the customer experience with innovative, award-winning visual art. The artists creating pieces for the Wilshire/Rodeo station are Meleko Mokgosi, Rigo 23 and Devon Tsuno. The artists creating works for the Century City/Constellation Station include Eddie Rodolfo Aparicio, Sarah Cain, Phung Huynh, Oscar Magallanes and Analia Saban. The artists for the Westwood/UCLA Station are Moses X. Ball, Karen Hampton, Yunhee Min, Gala Porras-Kim and Iris Yirei Hu. Sandow Birk, Victoria Fu + Matt Rich, Francesco Simeti and Eloy Torrez will create artworks for the Westwood/VA Hospital Station.
The artists were selected through an open, competitive process following the recommendation of a panel of nationally recognized curators, local arts professionals and community members from the Purple Line Extension project area, all of whom have ties to the communities served by the future stations. The professional qualifications of more than 1,500 artists were considered during the selection process. Finalists created researched proposals that responded to the specific sites and communities along the subway alignment.
The artists join the nine others who were selected earlier for the future Wilshire/La Brea, Wilshire/Fairfax and Wilshire/La Cienega stations. They are Eamon Ore-Giron, Fran Siegel, Mark Dean Veca, Karl Haendel, Ken Gonzalez-Day, Susan Silton, Todd Gray, Mariana Castillo Deball and Soo Kim.
