Sydney Poitier

1927-2022

In honor of Black History Month, we recognize Sydney Poitier, who died January 6, 2022. He was a legend of the “Golden Age of Hollywood,” and was the first African American man to win the Academy Award for Best Actor. He also received Golden Globe Awards and a Grammy Award as well. Other recognitions included being granted knighthood by Queen Elizabeth in 1874, the Cecil B. De Mille Award, the Screen Actors Guild Lifetime Achievement Award. Poitier received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Barack Obama in 2009.
