Theatre West will receive a $10,000 Challenge America grant to support a local tour of its Storybook Theatre production of “Little Red Riding Hood,” by Lloyd J. Schwartz. Theatre West’s production is among 168 projects throughout the United States that were selected to receive funds through the program. It was the first National Endowment for the Arts grant awarded to Theatre West in its 60-year history.
“The National Endowment for the Arts is proud to support arts projects like this one from Theatre West that help support the community’s creative economy,” NEA Acting Chair Ann Eilers said. “Theatre West in Los Angeles is among the organizations nationwide that are using the arts as a source of strength, a path to well-being, and providing access and opportunity for people to connect and find joy through the arts.”
“Despite the great wealth and breadth of arts and culture in Los Angeles, it is astonishing to recognize how many communities and families do not have access to live children’s theater,” Theatre West managing director Eugene J. Hutchins said. “This grant will allow us to go into communities and bring our fun and interactive musical to more children.”
The production of “Little Red Riding Hood” will tour the communities of Pacoima, Panorama City, Sun Valley, Alhambra, El Monte and La Puente this summer. Theatre West will partner and engage with local organizations to promote the shows and ensure they are accessible to youth.
More information about the project will be released in May. Theatre West is located at 3333 Cahuenga Blvd. West. For information, visit theatrewest.org.
