Former Los Angeles City Council President John Ferraro, 4th District, was shown in this photograph in the Dec. 12, 1991, issue of the Beverly Press and Park Labrea News highlighting a community partnership to fight crime. Ferraro, left, was joined by LAPD Wilshire Division Capt. J.J. Davis, right, and Joseph Mehanna, owner of the former Metropolitan Auto Center on La Brea Avenue, to announce that the dealership was donating a new Chevrolet pickup to the LAPD for graffiti abatement and crime suppression duties. The pickup had a paint sprayer and other equipment to quickly remove graffiti. Wilshire Division Sgt. Edgar Payne said in the accompanying article that it was another tool to address rising crime in the area. On Dec. 7, the nonprofit Melrose Action unveiled cameras in the Melrose community that were installed through a public-private partnership to fight crime.
