The MAK Center for Art and Architecture is welcoming residents to its 50th iteration of The Artists and Architects-in-Residence Program at the Mackey Apartments.
The new residents are Emilija Škarnulytė, Julia Obleitner, Helvijs Savickis and Manuel Gorkiewicz.
The six-month residency welcomes international artists working at the intersection of architecture and visual culture to live and work in Los Angeles. The residency culminates in a final group project presentation at the Mackey Apartments Garage Top from March 17-20, 2022.
Škarnulytė is a nomadic visual artist and filmmaker. Moving between fiction and documentary, she works primarily with deep time, from the cosmic and geologic to the ecological and political.
Obleitner is an architect and artist operating between new media, performative works and architecture. In her work, she focuses on large scale territories, and contemporary political, ecological and urban issues.
Savickis was born in Latvia, Riga. He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna with a master’s in architecture. His main research focus point is on the geopolitical footprints of mankind, documenting and interacting with them in order to shift and preserve the perception of collective memories.
Gorkiewicz was born in Graz, Austria, and he lives and works in Vienna. He studied at the University of Vienna and Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and received various prizes and residencies across Europe, including in Copenhagen, Istanbul and Rome.
Initiated in October 1995, the program is funded by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture in cooperation with the MAK – Austrian Museum of Applied Arts / Contemporary Art, Vienna.
