Former Vice President Al Gore visited Fairfax High School in this photograph in the June 24, 1999, issue of the Beverly Press and Park Labrea News. Gore presented his plan for safer schools and said it offered more federal support for activities to keep young people out of trouble, and tougher penalties for criminals who target children. His speech on school safety was made a little more than two months after the mass shooting in April 1999 at Columbine High School in Colorado. At the time, Gore had also recently announced his candidacy for president in the 2000 election.
