Jewish World Watch, a Los Angeles-based organization that fights genocide and mass atrocities worldwide, applauds West Hollywood, which, in partnership with JWW, introduced and passed a resolution supporting Uyghur human rights in March.

The resolution condemns human rights violations against the Uyghur people in China’s Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region and calls on clothing brands to cut ties with suppliers implicated in Uyghur forced labor – the first such resolution passed by a municipal government.

“It is essential that our elected leaders take meaningful action on behalf of those suffering gross human rights violations,” JWW Executive Director Serena Oberstein said. “Jewish World Watch commends the leadership of Mayor [Lindsey] Horvath, who demonstrated true leadership and acted swiftly when we approached her about the need to take action on behalf of Uyghur human rights.”

Additionally, city staff will review its contracting process to determine how it can ensure the city and its vendors purchase forced labor-free goods. According to a recent report, at least 82 international brands currently utilize supply chains tainted by Uyghur forced labor.

Since 2017, more than 2 million Uyghurs have suffered human rights violations at the hands of the Chinese Communist Party. These abuses include mass surveillance, detention, family separation, indoctrination, forced labor, sterilization and suspected extrajudicial killings.
