In anticipation of the start of the Brush Clearance Season, which begins May 15, Los Angeles City Councilwoman Nithya Raman, 4th District, visited the Los Angeles Fire Department Air Operations Unit at Fire Station 114 located on the grounds of Van Nuys Airport. She met with Deputy Chief Armando Hogan, commander of operations for the West Bureau; Deputy Chief Trevor Richmond, commander of operations for the Valley Bureau; and Captain Brandon Ruedy of LAFD Air Operations to discuss brush season preparedness, daily search and rescue in the hillside communities and aircraft safety operations out of Van Nuys Airport, as well as LAFD’s innovative strategies for serving the constituents of Council District 4.
Raman discussed plans to work in close coordination with LAFD to shore up preventative measures such as the investment in trail signage, collaboration with community organizations to organize brush clearance trainings, as well as raising awareness about the free what3words mobile app available, which is used to help lost hikers in distress be located by LAFD personnel even when offline.
