Holocaust Museum LA presents “Sunday Storytime – Nicky & Vera: A Quiet Hero of the Holocaust and the Children He Rescued,” on Sunday, April 18, at 11 a.m.
The virtual event will feature a reading by award-winning author Peter Sis and a family-friendly panel with Sis, Barbara Winton, the daughter of Sir Nicholas Winton and Michele Gold, museum board chair and the daughter of Rita Berwald, who journeyed to safety on a Kindertransport out of Leipzig, Germany.
“Nicky & Vera,” an Amazon Book of the Month, is the story of Nicholas Winton – who rescued over 700 children in the Kindertransport – intertwined with the story of Vera Gissing – one of the children he saved. Called “captivating” by the New York Times and “spectacularly imaginative” by the Sunday (London) Times, “Nicky & Vera” is told through gentle yet matter-of-fact language and engaging illustrations to show the triumph of humanity during one of history’s darkest times.
Sis’ book is for all ages and, in particular, children ages 6-9. Sis is a Czech-born author/illustrator of three Caldecott Honor books, including “The Wall,” which also won the Sibert Medal. He is the first children’s book illustrator to win the MacArthur Fellowship, and he also won the Hans Christian Andersen Award.
