The Internal Revenue Service’s Criminal Investigation Division is reminding the public to file accurate tax returns and choose a tax preparer wisely. Tax season officially starts on Friday, Feb. 12, when the IRS begins accepting and processing 2020 tax year returns.
Tax return preparers are vital to the U.S. tax system, authorities said. Although most preparers provide honest and professional services, there are some dishonest preparers who set up during filing season to steal money, as well as personal and financial information. Taxpayers can avoid falling victim by using someone who is available year-round in case questions arise after the filing season, inquiring about the preparer’s credentials and checking their qualifications, and asking about service fees. Avoid preparers who base fees on a percentage of their client’s refund or claim to offer a bigger refund than their competition. For information, visit irs.gov.
