More than 100 items and experiences have been donated by people across the country to raise critically needed funds for the Los Angeles House of Ruth, which for more than 40 years has provided shelter and counseling for women and their children who are victims of domestic violence and homelessness. House of Ruth’s inaugural online auction will run from Nov. 20-29, with more than 100 experiences and items starting at $15.
“We have found over the years that our clients who are victims of domestic violence and those who are homeless have one thing in common: They do not have family or friends to help them. So, we become their family: getting them back on their feet by providing counseling, tutoring, parenting and anger management classes, referrals and so much more prior to transitioning them into Section 8 housing for which we have a remarkable 90% success rate. But our funding only goes so far, and due to COVID-19, we must take extra steps,” Executive Director Jennifer Gaeta said.
Highlights of auction items are 12 domestic and international trips, a Bentley package, and a pair of earrings designed by Angelina Jolie. Other items include children’s toys, home décor, clothing, art, electronics and more.
“Founded in 1978, we have grown from a four-bed transitional shelter to having over 80 beds, and helped more than 5,000 women and their children,” Gaeta said. “We ensure the well-being of our clients by helping them achieve freedom and control over their lives, providing hope for the future for themselves and their family. We believe that when homeless individuals, especially victims of domestic violence, receive the services they need in a timely and engaging manner, they can overcome obstacles to self-sufficiency.”
