With less than two weeks until voters make their choice for Los Angeles City Council member from the 4th District, incumbent David Ryu and challenger Nithya Raman have received key endorsements.
Former Democratic presidential nominee and former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton endorsed Ryu.
“Hillary Clinton is a champion for women’s rights, for children and for a more just and fair democracy,” Ryu said. “She is an icon, she is a trailblazer and she has delivered real tangible change for the most vulnerable in our society. I was proud to be one of the over 65 million Americans to support her candidacy for president of the United States, and I am beyond humbled to have her support in my campaign.”
Ryu was also endorsed by Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-San Francisco).
“Nancy Pelosi is a leader who knows how to get things done,” Ryu said. “She helped pass Obamacare into law, expanding healthcare coverage for millions of Americans. She has reined in Wall Street, led the repeal of the discriminatory ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ policy, and successfully beat back attempts to privatize Social Security. She knows how to move this country forward. I am proud to call her my speaker and honored to have her support in this race.”
In addition, the Los Angeles Times endorsed Ryu.
“Ryu has impressed during his first term with his willingness to listen, learn and respond, and to fight the good fight in the face of opposition from defenders of the status quo. He’s earned a second term,” the newspaper said in its endorsement.
Ryu has also been endorsed by Planned Parenthood Advocacy Project Los Angeles County Action Fund, Los Angeles County Democratic Party, Sierra Club, L.A. County Federation of Labor, more than two dozen labor unions and over 300 community leaders in District 4.
Raman was endorsed by former candidate for president and U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont).
“I can’t tell you how much that means to me,” Raman said. “He was the person who showed me the possibilities of politics. He proved that, just by leading with values, we can build lasting movements for change. Thank you, Bernie.”
Raman also received an endorsement from Sarah Kate Levy, who finished third in the March election.
“Sarah Kate Levy’s courage, passion for progressive change and longtime commitment to fighting for the rights of women are such an inspiration to me,” Raman said. “Although we were competing in the primary against one another, we saw eye to eye on many important issues facing the city, and I’m so grateful for her support in this race.”
“Nithya Raman is the candidate I trust,” Levy said. “She’s got the skills and experience to lead L.A. out of crisis and build a sustainable, welcoming city for all.”
Raman has also been endorsed by the Working Families Party, the Democratic Socialists of America, the National Women’s Political Caucus, the Los Angeles League of Conservation Voters, the Progressive Asian Network for Action, UAW Western States Region 8 and others.
