Los Angeles County Supervisor Sheila Kuehl, 3rd District, has responded positively to the news that four L.A. County schools had met state waiver requirements and were approved to reopen for grades TK-2. Three of the four schools are in the 3rd District.
“Kids flourish at school, so I was very glad over the past few weeks that nearly 200 schools, most of them public schools, have been able to partially reopen specifically to accommodate students with special education needs,” Kuehl wrote in a statement on Oct. 21. “These four schools, the first to be approved through the state waiver process, are independent schools, as are many of the schools that have applied to re-open TK-2 classrooms since the waiver process began.
“As the waiver application process continues, I would not be surprised to see our public schools lag behind in their ability to reopen classes to all students as they do not enjoy the same level of resources required to fully shift to the processes necessary to ensure the health of every staff member and student,” she added.
Kuehl highlighted the Aug. 4 motion passed by the Board of Supervisors taking an official position in support of Proposition 15, which increases funding sources for public schools, community colleges and local government services by changing the tax assessment levels of commercial and industrial property.
“Our public schools need greater resources to protect the health of all of their students, teachers and staff, so we can get every student in L.A. County back in the classroom where they learn best,” she said.
