Democratic Presidential Candidate Joe Biden announced on Aug. 11 that Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) will be his vice presidential running mate in the Nov. 3 election. Biden announced his selection after weeks of vetting and deliberation.
“I have the great honor to announce that I’ve picked Kamala Harris – a fearless fighter for the little guy, and one of the country’s finest public servants – as my running mate,” Biden tweeted. “Back when Kamala was Attorney General [of California], she worked closely with [my son and former Delaware Attorney General] Beau. I watched as they took on the big banks, lifted up working people and protected women and kids from abuse. I was proud then, and I’m proud now to have her as my partner in this campaign.”
Much speculation had arisen recently over who Biden would select as his vice presidential candidate. Potential candidates included Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, former Obama administration National Security Advisor Susan Rice and U.S. Rep. Karen Bass (D-Los Angeles).
“Joe Biden can unify the American people because he’s spent his life fighting for us. And as president, he’ll build an America that lives up to our ideals,” Harris tweeted. “I’m honored to join him as our party’s nominee for vice president, and [to] do what it takes to make him our commander in chief.”
Biden and Harris are expected to accept the nominations at the 2020 Democratic National Convention, which will be held from Aug. 17-20. For information and schedule, visit demconvention.com.
