Project Angel Food raised $700,000, surpassing its goal of $500,000, during the first ever Project Angel Food Lead With Love Emergency Telethon on June 28.
The telethon aired live on KTLA5 and KTLA anchor Jessica Holmes, “Will and Grace” star Eric McCormack and Sheryl Lee Ralph hosted the star-studded fundraising event.
Most fundraisers have been canceled for the year due to COVID-19, but the money raised for the 30-year-old organization will aid its mission to continue serving healthy meals to more than 2,000 people per day.
Clients pay nothing for these medically tailored meals and Project Angel Food is on track to deliver 1.4 million meals in 2020.
Donations poured in through phone calls, emails and texts. People who donated also shared stories about how the organization affected their lives.
Auctioneers Gabriel Butu and MYFM’s Lisa Foxx kept audiences apprised of the progress of the thousands of donations throughout the evening.
DIY masks were offered up for auction starting with McCormack, who offered his Project Angel Food mask handmade by his wife Janet. Food Network star Sandra Lee donated $5,000 to have the special one-of-a-kind mask for her sister.
Hollywood medium Tyler Henry, who has a waiting list of over 200,000 people for a reading, auctioned one off to Beth Rudin DeWoody, an L.A. and New York philanthropist, for a $10,000 donation.
Jamie Lee Curtis made a $10,000 donation from her family foundation, and other big donors of the night include the California Community Foundation, Jewish Community Foundation, Stanley and Joyce Black Family Foundation, Nextstar/KTLA, Jean Pierre LeBlanc, David Vikter Foundation and many more.
The show was filled with music such as Kelly Clarkson’s cover of U2’s “Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking for,” Project Food Board member Juan Pablo di Pace rendition of “Without You” and Billy Idol, who performed “To Be a Lover” along with guitarist Steve Stevens.
The livestream of the show can be found on KTLA’s Facebook page and Project Angel Food’s website. It is still possible to donate by texting LOVE20 to 50155.
