Re “Letters to the editor: I am not your enemy,” July 16 issue
Capt. Shannon Paulson, commanding officer of the LAPD Wilshire Division, raises a good point. “There is a small percentage of those among us who have acted out of carelessness, laziness or even criminality.” I call those the “bad cops.”
I am sure the majority other members of our community readily agree. We sympathize with all the good cops who suffer because of the deeds by those bad cops.
This seems to be a wide-ranging problem for police departments everywhere. The best solution is much greater caution in who is accepted to join, who is accepted to the police academies. From experience and discussion with others, I know that there are people with a mindset that craves the power of the police uniform, the badge, the gun at the waist, the upraised baton, etc.
Can we do a better job – a much better job – in keeping them out? Perhaps better psychological evaluations?

Thank you for printing LAPD Capt. Shannon Paulson’s letter in the July 16 edition. It said what needed to be said.
