Los Angeles County Supervisor Ernest E. Debs was shown in this photograph in the May 14, 1970, issue of the Park Labrea News with Mrs. Edward Colten, her 7-year-old daughter Lauren Lee and Park La Brea resident Mrs. Everett Small, chairwoman of the Exceptional Children’s Foundation. With the help of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, the foundation launched a campaign that year to ensure children with developmental disabilities received educational support beginning in preschool. Lauren Lee Colten attended the Nora Sterry Elementary School, an LAUSD campus that still serves general and special education students at 1730 Corinth Ave., in West Los Angeles. The Exceptional Children’s Foundation, founded in 1946, continues to serve students with disabilities by offering educational and family support.
