The Los Angeles Chapter of the International Society for the Advancement of Material and Process Engineering has selected the 2020 recipients of the annual Irene Epstein Memorial Scholarships, which are given to Fairfax High School seniors planning to study engineering, science, mathematics and medicine in college.
Howard Katzman, of The Aerospace Corporation, announced that seniors Dong Su Kim, Juel Nissi Park and Yomna Ehab Shousha will each receive $4,000.
Irene Epstein was the wife of Fairfax District resident George Epstein, a retired aerospace engineer. The Irene Epstein Memorial Scholarship program was initiated in 1996 shortly after her death to recognize her desire to assist financially-needy, academically-deserving students attend college. This marks the 24th year that the scholarships have been awarded.
With a GPA of 4.463, Kim is ranked first out of 328 students in his graduating class at Fairfax High School. He has earned an “A” grade in every advanced placement class in which he was enrolled, including environmental science, biology, statistics, calculus, physics and psychology. He plans to attend the University of California, Berkeley, and major in bioengineering.
Park will graduate second in his class with a cumulative GPA of 4.378. He has earned “A” grades in many advanced placement classes, including calculus, physical chemistry, biology, environmental science, macroeconomics and computer science.
He plans to study human biology on a pre-med track at the University of Southern California. Park’s goal is to become a physician.
Shousha is ranked third in her class at Fairfax High School, with a GPA of 4.365. She has earned “A” grades in environmental science, statistics, calculus, physics and macroeconomics, and has been named a Fairfax High School Advanced Placement Scholar with Honor. Shousha plans to attend Claremont McKenna College as a pre-med or engineering student, majoring in economics and engineering, or science management.
