Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti issued an order on March 30 to close farmers’ markets throughout the city pending a review of each market’s operational plan to implement social distancing of at least 6 feet.
“We have seen images of dangerously crowded farmers markets – so I’m announcing the temporary suspension of farmers markets pending city review of physical distancing plans needed to keep communities safe,” Garcetti said. “We will review plans immediately so markets can stay open this week.”
The order did not apply to the Original Farmers Market, corner of Third and Fairfax, which has restaurants, butcher shops, a grocery store, post office and other essential businesses that remain open. Many of the Original Farmers Market’s restaurants are offering prepared food for take-out and delivery. Grocers are stocked with meat and poultry, fresh produce, eggs, pantry essentials and specialty foods. Delivery is available by visiting mercato.com. For information, visit farmersmarketla.com.
The mayor’s order pertained to many neighborhood farmers’ markets, such as the Hollywood Farmers Market, operated by Sustainable Economic Enterprises of Los Angeles, and the Miracle Mile, La Brea, Melrose Place and Larchmont farmers’ markets, which are operated by Raw Inspiration. On March 31, the Los Angeles Bureau of Street Services announced that operational plans had been approved for the Larchmont and Melrose Place farmers’ markets, which will be open on Sunday, April 5.
It was uncertain whether the other markets would be open. Inquiries to SEE-LA and Raw Inspiration seeking information were not answered by press time. Websites for both companies said social distancing has been implemented. Customers are advised to check websites or call for updates.
