The city of West Hollywood will host two series of rent stabilization ordinance workshops in February, one for tenants and another for landlords.
Known as “RSO Building Blocks” workshops, the events are held twice a year to educate property owners, managers, tenants and community members about the city’s rent stabilization ordinance. All workshops will take place in Room 5 at the West Hollywood Community Center at Plummer Park, 7377 Santa Monica Blvd.
A Tenant Advanced workshop will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 11, at 7 p.m. The session will cover eviction protections, tenant harassment and mediation services, social services for low-income seniors, reasonable accommodations under the Fair Housing Act, and information about pets, service dogs and therapy animals.
Landlord Basics will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 18, at 7 p.m. The session will provide landlords with a basic understanding of the RSO, landlord rights and responsibilities. Topics will include unit re-registrations, limits on rent increases, security deposits, annual registration fee and pass through, minimum maintenance standards, temporary relocation, requirements for legal entry, and Airbnb and short-term rentals.
A Landlord Advanced workshop will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 25, at 7 p.m. covering topics such as registering new tenancies online; paying the program annual fee and how to correctly pass-through half the fee to tenants; maintenance standards for paint, floor and window blinds; calculating and applying allowable rent increases; maintaining housing services and parking; the rent stabilization petition and hearings process for determining maximum allowable rent and whether housing services have been reduced or removed; and tenancy just-cause eviction protections.
The workshops are free, reservations are recommended. For more information and to RSVP, call Administrative Specialist Tom Trevor at (323)848-6472, email ttrevor@weho.org, or visit weho.org.
