On Feb. 8, Luis De Jesus Los Angeles announced its participation in the 11th edition of Art Los Angeles Contemporary in its new location at the Hollywood Athletic Club with a presentation of new paintings by Erik Olson and Josh Reames.
Olson renders friends, acquaintances and experiences through paint. The figures that populate his canvases are likened to characters in dramatic plays, each flaunting their own constructed personas and exuberant color. For Olson, every painting serves as a means to express many attributes or identities in one person or place simultaneously.
Reames’ new “bumper sticker” paintings are characterized by spontaneous mark-making and abstract gestures plastered over with images of satirical bumper stickers, other transient symbols and textual puns. By combining these elements, Reames expands on the virtual space of the digital screen: content that is untethered, often indexical, shifting, disappearing and non-hierarchical.
A collectors brunch will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the gallery on Wednesday, Feb. 12.
