The Los Angeles Department of Transportation will conduct its first count of people who walk and bike on Los Angeles streets using its Automated Traffic Surveillance and Control system and volunteers to count them.
The project is funded by a grant from the Toyota Mobility Foundation, funds from the city of Los Angeles Information Technology Agency and the California State University, Los Angeles. In addition to the count, the $825,000 grant from the Toyota Mobility Foundation will be used for a pilot program over the next two years to install new cameras and sensors and make updates to machine learning software with the goal of expanding personal mobility options.
The count will use cameras and volunteers deployed at specific locations throughout the city to monitor the number of people walking and cycling. Locations in the local area include Hollywood Boulevard between Argyle Avenue and Gower Street, Vine Street near Leland Way, and Fourth Street between Rossmore and Arden boulevards.
