Every year in late October across the country, thousands of Americans commemorate National Food Day by bringing diverse communities together to enjoy good food and push for improved policies to end hunger, promote health, protect food workers and care for the environment.

Food Day is celebrated each year at Los Angeles City Hall. This year, the ninth-annual celebration will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Oct. 25, and the theme is “Currents of Food: Changing Our Food System Through Art and Culture.”

Attendees, along with Mayor Eric Garcetti, will celebrate the various “Currents” of food as art, culture and justice through art installations, performances and an interactive fair. Additionally, each City Council member will honor a “Good Food Champion” from their district who creatively brings food culture to life.

This year, Good Food Champions include BLVD Kitchen from Council District 4, Vegan Glory from Council District 5 and Lupita’s Corner Market from Council District 13.

The festivities begin at 10 a.m. with a Food Day presentation in City Council Chambers, followed by art installations and performances from local artists, interactive information tables and food trucks. Featured artists include Alexandra Carter, Lakisha May, Teresa Flores and many more.

From 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., the speaker program will include remarks from Garcetti, City Councilman David Ryu, 4th District, and other city officials, as well as performances.

This year, Food Day in Los Angeles takes place during “CURRENT:LA Food,” a month-long event produced by the city’s Department of Cultural Affairs that features public art in city parks around the theme of food.

“Food for us comes from our relatives, whether they have wings or fins or roots. That is how we consider food. Food has a culture. It has a history. It has a story. It has relationships,” said Winona LaDuke, environmentalist and Indigenous activist.
