Leica Gallery Los Angeles presents a dual exhibition that highlights the subconscious mind through two unique photographic perspectives. “The Secret Garden of Lily LaPalma” by Maggie Steber and “After Hours” by Jesse Diamond runs from Sept. 12 to Oct. 21. The opening reception will be on Sept. 12 from 6 to 9 p.m.
“The Secret Garden of Lily LaPalma” presents the photographs Steber has accumulated from her various personal experiences, which reveal her fears and most private memories. It is an ongoing series that embodies Steber’s subconscious through her alter-ego, Lily LaPalma.
“In the Secret Garden, there is danger but also beauty in a wild jungle that has been growing unfettered. The photographs address every experience I have had in an exterior world but are now being reinterpreted in my interior landscape. I credit Lily, my alter ego, with taking the pictures. What I might miss, Lily sees,” Steber said.
“After Hours” showcases a series of photographs taken by Diamond after nightfall, where he was able to open a door to his subconscious and view an image beyond its subject matter.
“How far inside I choose to look is a choice based on how much truth, be it good or bad, I’m willing to handle. The selections of featured photographs in ‘After Hours’ are a document of a time period when I chose to walk in and close the door behind me,” Diamond said.
