The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Transit Administration announced on July 9 that $100 million in federal funding will be allocated to Phase 3 of Metro’s Purple Line Extension subway project.
The allocation is part of $300 million in grants to be provided for transportation projects, with projects in Seattle and Phoenix receiving $100 million each.
The funding will be provided through FTA’s Capital Investment Grants Program. It will be used to complete the section of Purple Line Extension from Century City to Westwood, which is expected to be completed by 2026.
“These federal grants will improve mobility and the quality of life for those who depend on public transit every day,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine L. Chao.
“I’m pleased the federal government continues to be committed to moving the Purple Line Extension forward,” added Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), who advocated for the funding. “This is critical funding for a long-awaited section that will help reduce traffic times, alleviate congestion and connect commuters from downtown Los Angeles to the Westside. I know Metro is eager to complete this extension before the 2028 Olympic Games to showcase our world-class public transportation options.”
Phase 3 of the Purple Line Extension project will extend the line 2.6-miles from the future Century City station to the Westwood/Veterans Hospital area. The first two sections (Phase 1 from Wilshire/Western to Wilshire/La Cienega and Phase 2 from Wilshire/La Cienega to Century City) have already been funded and are currently under construction.
“On behalf of Metro, I want to express our sincere gratitude to Senator Feinstein for her strong and sustained leadership in securing federal funding for the Westside Purple Line Extension Project,” said Metro CEO Phillip A. Washington. “Senator Feinstein has been and remains a remarkably effective champion for increasing mobility across Los Angeles County for millions of residents and for that our agency is extremely grateful.”
