The Institute of Contemporary Art Los Angeles is hosting a workshop titled “Marcus Kuiland-Nazario: Father Figure” on Wednesday, July 24, from 7 to 9 p.m.
Kuiland-Nazario, 18th Street Arts Center’s current Artist Lab resident, will lead participants in a collage workshop in conjunction with “Macho Stereo,” an exhibit on view at 18th Street Arts Center through July 26. Participants will create autobiographical collages about themselves and their father or father figure using photographs and other materials.
Attendees are asked to bring photographs, documents, deeds, certificates, awards, diplomas, ephemera and other materials to create the collages. The images will be duplicated on a color copier to form the basis of the collages. All items will be handled with care and returned at the end of the workshop.
The workshop begins with a participatory discussion about father figures led by Kuiland-Nazario, in consultation with “Macho Stereo” collaborator and therapist Mario Prietto. “Macho Stereo” is a new body of work by based on the 1955 Mexican novel, “Pedro Páramo,” by Juan Rulfo. The story, which focuses on the reunion between an estranged father and son, has been influential in Latin America but remains largely unknown in the United States, according to the artist.
The Institute of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles is located at 1717 E. Seventh St. For information, visit theicala.org/calendar.
