Spring is one of the best times of year for fresh produce, from strawberries and nectarines to asparagus and peas. Since 1934, the Original Farmers Market, corner of Third and Fairfax, has been a destination for buying fresh-picked fruits and vegetables grown under the California sun.
It all started in July of that year, when farmers began selling produce from the back of their trucks near the corner of Third and Fairfax. Eighty-five years later, the corner has blossomed into an iconic gathering place where shoppers can still find the tastiest, locally-grown produce from the trusted experts at Farm Fresh Produce and Farm Boy Produce.
Shoppers will find an array of stone fruits at the market including cherries, nectarines, plums and apricots. Perfect for baking into pies and galettes or simply enjoying on their own, the flavorful fruits herald picnics and sunshine-filled days ahead. Spring is also a peak time for asparagus, green beans, artichokes, fava beans, peas and cucumbers. Whether they’re used in a delicious salad or traditional pot pie, the vitamin-rich vegetables will bring crisp flavor to the table.
Farm Fresh Produce, adjacent to the Farmers Market parking lot, has been selling fruits and vegetables at the market since 1954, with most items sourced from farms less than two hours away. Owner Armando Puente was only 19 when he first started working with produce and has been in the grocery business most of his life. Farm Fresh is also known for freshly squeezed juices, which can be customized with numerous ingredients.
Farm Boy Produce, next to The Dog Bakery, is run by the father and son team of Peter and John Chae. With up to 10 different varieties of apples and six different kinds of peppers, Farm Boy offers a wide variety of products that can’t be found at most regular grocery stores, with a helpful staff so customers can find the produce they need.
