Ella Ruth Langdon was shown on the cover of the May 4, 1950, issue of the Park Labrea News in celebration of Mother’s Day.
She lived on Drexel Avenue with her daughter and son-in-law and looked after their two children, who were 5 years old and 14 months old at the time.
Langdon went by the name “Nursie” because her vocation was caring for infants. An accompanying article quoted her as saying, “Babies are my business,” and she was known for baby-sitting many children in her Park La Brea neighborhood. The article also stated that several people urged the newspaper to use her photograph on the cover of the Mother’s Day issue because she symbolized the quintessential matriarch.
This year, Mother’s Day is on Sunday, May 12. For information about dining and opportunities to celebrate mom, see page 12.
