Saturn Street Elementary School in the Mid-Wilshire area is currently participating in its second annual Disney Musicals in Schools program, which helps local, underserved elementary schools put on a Disney KIDS musical of their choice.
Saturn Street, located at 5360 Saturn St., and the other four schools – Monrovia Unified School District’s Wild Rose School of Creative Arts and LAUSD’s Breed Street Elementary, Cantara Street School and Tulsa Street Elementary – began a 17-week musical theater residency last winter. Each school received performance rights, education support materials and guidance from two teaching artists from the Center Theatre Group.
Educators learned how to produce, direct, choreograph and music direct their third- through fifth-grade students in a musical.
Saturn Street students are in the midst of rehearsing “The Lion King KIDS,” which will be performed for their classmates. After that, the students will move to the stage of the 2,000-seat Ahmanson Theatre to perform a number from their show in front of an invited audience on Monday, April 29 at 3:30 p.m.
“When the Disney Musicals in Schools application was received, we knew this was for us. Then, when the notification was made that we were selected, our staff first cheered and then said, ‘Okay, here we go, it’s happening and it’s now!’” said Tracie Bryant, principal of Saturn Street Elementary.
