The Los Angeles Unified School District Board of Education voted unanimously on May 21 to appoint Jackie Goldberg to fill the vacant District 5 board seat temporarily until the results of the May 14 election are certified by the county of Los Angeles and declared by the city of Los Angeles. The resolution to appoint Goldberg was co-sponsored by all board members.

Goldberg, who defeated Heather Repenning, a long-time aide to Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti during the election last week, pending the certification of final voting results, called for increased investment in public education.
“I am overwhelmed by the support of so many teachers, administrators, classified employees, parents, volunteers and many others,” Goldberg said. “So many of us are doing all we can to help our children succeed. But we all have something in common. We know we are not getting enough investment in public education. For all those who helped bring me here, we will continue the fight for more investment in our children, and we will not stop until our children are getting all they deserve.”
Superintendent Austin Beutner joined LAUSD board members in welcoming Goldberg.
“I am pleased Ms. Goldberg can begin serving on the board immediately,” Beutner said. “The students and families in board District 5 have a strong, experienced advocate on the Board of Education.”
“I look forward to working with our new colleague to address our critical need to increase school funding and get resources back into classrooms,” added board Vice President Nick Melvoin. “I know that Board Member Goldberg’s years of local and state experience will be invaluable as we work to reverse decades of disinvestment in public education.”
