A 26-year-old man from Utah was charged on April 16 with murder for the hit-and-run death of an electric scooter rider in Hollywood, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.
Jared Walter Anderson, of Enoch, Utah, faces one felony count each of murder, vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence, gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, hit-and-run driving resulting in death, and fleeing a pursuing peace officer’s motor vehicle causing death. The defendant has a prior conviction of driving under the influence in Utah.
Shortly before 3 a.m. on April 13, Anderson was allegedly driving a pickup truck eastbound on Sunset Boulevard when he made a left turn at Vine Street and struck the victim, who was riding a scooter in a crosswalk. The victim, Evan Dyer Faram, 31, of Dallas, died later at a hospital.
Police were nearby and attempted to pull over Anderson, who drove away. The defendant allegedly drove against traffic and failed to stop at traffic signals during a pursuit. He crashed his pickup in a residential neighborhood near Wilton Place and Rosewood Avenue and was arrested.
Det. Connie White, with the LAPD’s West Traffic Division, said Anderson was allegedly intoxicated when he was arrested. She said the collision illustrates the dangers of driving while intoxicated.
“It’s very sad. [The victim’s] parents just flew out from Texas and we met with them,” White added on Wednesday. “It’s very unfortunate.”
Anderson faces up to life in state prison if convicted. The collision remains under investigation.
