More than 31 inches of rain fell in downtown L.A. in 1997-98, making it one of the wettest seasons on record in the city. The highest rainfall totals in Los Angeles occurred in 1883-84, when 38.18 inches of rain fell, according to L.A. Almanac. This year’s winter season has already produced 10.21 inches of rain in Los Angeles through the end of January, with totals for February still pending. Meteorologists estimate that 18 trillion gallons of rain has fallen statewide this month, with more showers expected today. Los Angeles’ average rainfall from July through June is 14.64 inches, and rainfall totals are expected to surpass that amount when the February totals are announced at the end of the month.
