The event, which was sponsored by the Cusumano Family Foundation, had previously been postponed because of the Woolsey fire last November. More than 300 people attended the fundraiser in support of surgical care for sick children throughout the world.
Three honorees who supported Mending Kids were also recognized, including children’s advocate and Southern Methodist University student Sienna Dugan; the Memorial Care Miller Children’s & Women’s Hospital Long Beach; and Dr. Robert Bernstein, chief of staff at Shriners Hospitals for Children-Portland.
Mending Kids recruits volunteer teams of surgeons and medical professionals and deploys them to developing countries to treat children. The volunteers also train local medical professionals and help children in the United States through the Los Angeles Hometown Missions.
“The gala was such a wonderful display of the amazing people who do such great work helping kids all over the world,” said Mending Kids board member and surgeon Dr. Ayal Willner. “Supporting this work in any way, as a medical professional, as a staff person, and as a donor, allows us all to be a part of the Mending Kids dream.”
