The Los Angeles City Council unanimously approved a resolution on Feb. 19 asking City Attorney Mike Feuer to pursue a legal challenged against the Trump administration over its declaration of an emergency along the U.S. Mexico border.
The council directed Feuer to either join other entities such as the state of California in a lawsuit against the president or file a lawsuit on behalf of the city. The resolution was approved without discussion.
Trump issued the emergency declaration on Feb. 15 in what many view as an attempt to obtain billions in funding for a border wall that was not approved by Congress. The resolution stated that the emergency declaration would adversely affect the economy.
The Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office is in the process of determining how to best proceed with a lawsuit challenging the emergency declaration.
“My office will work closely with the council to determine the city’s most effective strategy for supporting challenges to the president’s unlawful emergency declaration,” Feuer said.
