Beyond the Bell, an afterschool program overseen by the Los Angeles Unified School District, is hosting the 11th annual Beyond the Bell Golf Classic on Monday, Nov. 12, at the Oakmont Country Club in Glendale.
With collaborative partners such as basketball legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and his Skyhook Foundation, the Thelonius Monk Jazz Institute and Northrup Grumman, Beyond the Bell is in the process of expanding its reach.
The golf tournament will be followed by a dinner banquet honoring Sandra Evers-Manly, vice president of global responsibility at Northrup Grumman, which is a longtime supporter of Beyond the Bell’s CyberPatriot program for high school and middle school students.
Beyond the Bell serves over 100,000 students per day in free afterschool programs. Participating schools must have at least 50 percent or more of their student population receiving free and reduced lunches, meaning they are at poverty level or below.
The programs provide homework assistance and tutoring, physical fitness and sports, and enrichment activities such as art, dance, leadership and music. Data shows that students who participate in afterschool activities have higher school attendance rates, improved grade point averages and increased high school graduation rates, and are less involved in crime.
Golf registration is $250 per person; $75 for the dinner only. For information, call (213)241-7900, or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
