Rodeo Road, from Jefferson Boulevard to Arlington Avenue in the city of Los Angeles, will be renamed Obama Boulevard in honor of the former president of the U.S.
A motion by City Council President Herb Wesson in June 2017 to change the street’s name noted Obama’s time as an undergraduate at Occidental College from 1979-81. After announcing his candidacy for president in 2007, Obama held his first campaign rally at Rancho Cienega Park in the 10th Council District.
“The renaming will enable all people who travel the boulevard to recognize the road as a fixed landmark within the city of Los Angeles dedicated to celebrating the legacy of President Obama,” the motion stated.
U.S. Rep. Karen Bass wrote to Wesson last year, after the motion was presented, in support of naming the street after Obama.
“President Obama and I share a similar passion of community organizing and leadership training on the grassroots levels,” she wrote. “As you know, through my organization, Community Coalition, and through his organization of the Yes We Can/Hope Fund, both groups were founded on the strength of training and cultivating new leaders in the community, to see change … and to make the world a better place.”
Mayor Eric Garcetti announced the City Council’s approval of the street’s name change in a tweet on Aug. 28.
“We’re thrilled that Angelenos and visitors will forever be reminded of the legacy of President Barack Obama when traveling across L.A.,” he said.
