Rhythm and blues meets Hebrew and the Jews at an Open House Shabbat on Friday, Aug. 24, at 7:30 p.m., and Saturday, Aug. 25, at 10 a.m., at Hollywood Temple Beth El. The event is a musical and spiritual appetizer for the upcoming Jewish High Holy Days, led by Rabbis Norbert Weinberg and Steven Rosenberg, with Hazzan Stacey Morse.
Just as the temple was the Jewish home for the founders of the modern entertainment industry, Hollywood Temple Beth El is opening as a home for contemporary Jews in an age of the interconnection. Enjoy Morse’s lively music based on Shabbat and High Holy Day themes while the Rabbis offer wit and wisdom during services. Refreshments will be served and displays will highlight Hollywood Temple Beth El programs.
High Holy Days services will be held the first night of Rosh Hashana, Sunday, Sept. 9, as well as the mornings of Sept. 10 and 11. Yom Kippur will be observed on the evening of Tuesday, Sept. 18, and Wednesday morning and late afternoon, Sept. 19. Seating for High Holy Days services at Hollywood Temple Beth El must be reserved by visiting eventbrite.com.
A major feature of the High Holy Days service at the synagogue is its new prayer book, which interweaves 2,000- and 3,000-yearold texts with modern interpretations and user-friendly English transcription. The temple also has an ambience that is warm, welcoming, and inclusive. Rabbinic discussions and the music of this season help participants move forward to a meaningful year.
Hollywood Temple Beth El, known for its art deco sanctuary, is also home to the Iranian American Jewish Federation, a college and school. The temple is located at 1317 N. Crescent Heights Blvd., in West Hollywood. For information or to RSVP, call (323)656-3150, or visit facebook.com/htbel.
