American Cinematheque and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art present “3D: Double Vision,” a film series running from Thursday, Aug. 2, through Sunday, Aug. 12, at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood and the Aero Theatre in Santa Monica.
The series coincides with LACMA’s exhibit “3D: Double Vision” exhibit running through March 31, 2019. The exhibit is the first North American survey of 3D objects and practices featuring artifacts of mass culture alongside historic and contemporary art.
The first public presentation of a 3D motion picture occurred on June 10, 1915 at New York’s Astor Theatre. In the 1950s, the medium experienced its first major popularity as studios scrambled to compete with television. The film “Bwana Devil” kicked off an era that had viewers donning cardboard glasses. The golden age of 3D lasted just a few years in the early 1950s before theater owners tired of the requirements of the dual-strip format – two projectors running in perfect sync – and turned to other formats such as CinemaScope.
The 3D format experienced a renaissance in the 1980s and many contemporary films still use the format. American Cinematheque will feature 3D films at the Egyptian Theatre, including “Amityville 3-D” (1983) being shown this evening, Aug. 2, at 7:30 p.m.; “Friday the 13th Part III” (1982) and “Frankenstein’s Bloody Terror” (1968) screening on Friday, Aug. 3, at 7:30 p.m.; and “Starchaser: The Legend of Orin” (1985) being shown on Saturday, Aug. 4, at 3 p.m.
On Saturday, Aug. 4, at 7:30 p.m., Beyond Fest presents “The Meg-A-Thon,” a free event featuring a special sneak preview of Warner Bros. Pictures and Gravity Pictures’ “The Meg” (2018), as well as “Jaws 3D” (1983) and “Deep Blue Sea” (1999).
Additionally, “Spacehunter: Adventures in The Forbidden Zone” (1983) will be shown on Sunday, Aug. 5, at 5:30 p.m.; and “Metalstorm: The Destruction of Jared-Syn” (1983) and “Rottweiler” (1983) will be shown on Monday, Aug. 6, at 7:30 p.m., at the Egyptian Theatre.
The series switches venues to the Aero Theatre in Santa Monica from Thursday, Aug. 9, through Sunday, Aug. 12, with screenings of “The Maze” (1953), Cease Fire” (1953), House of Wax” (1953), “The Mad Magician” (1954), “Black Panther” (2018), “Man in the Dark” (1953), “The Creature From the Black Lagoon” (1954) and “Dial M for Murder” (1954).
